Our study stands out in the field of Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) as it focuses on the increasingly vital solution for sustainable food production. Hydroponics is at its forefront, offering superior yields and produce quality compared to traditional farming. Effective nutrient management is key in hydroponics, and recent research indicates that nutrient concentrations can be optimised without compromising crop quality and biomass.
Our latest study delves into the use of biostimulants—natural substances that enhance plant growth and nutrient efficiency. This research specifically evaluates the effectiveness of modified Hoagland's solutions supplemented with AlpStemin Root, AlpStemin Leaf, and gamma polyglutamic acid (PGA) in hydroponically grown lettuce. Conducted in a greenhouse with two lettuce cultivars, mullein and oakleaf, the study explores how these biostimulants influence plant growth, nutrient uptake, and overall quality.
The results of our study demonstrate significant improvements in shoot and root biomass, enhanced nutrient uptake, and reduced nitrate and soluble sugar concentrations. These findings have substantial implications for developing more efficient and sustainable hydroponic nutrient management strategies, contributing to the advancement of controlled environment agriculture.
